RISE <\/span>is a<\/span> <\/span>\n service model<\/em> <\/span>that comes<\/span> <\/span>alongside<\/em>\n <\/span>schools in their efforts of becoming a<\/span> <\/span>trauma-informed system\ufeff<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Through professional learning and coaching services, RISE equips educators with knowledge and capacity to REALIZE the neurological, emotional and behavioral effects of adversity and the influence it has on the teaching and learning\n dynamic; to RECOGNIZE the signs and symptoms in self, staff, students, and families; to RESPOND with <\/em>fully integrated resilience-based <\/em><\/strong>practices and procedures rooted in attunement, attachment, and safety;<\/strong> in\n order to RESIST re-traumatization so that optimal teaching and learning can occur within the domains of social-emotional and academics.<\/p>\n

When fully implemented, a trauma-informed system, on all levels, sustains an ever-evolving process of understanding itself, practices, and procedures that result in continuous learning and the embodiment of attunement, attachment,\n and safety for all staff and students. (SAMHSA, 2014). <\/p>\n

One time PD doesn’t work. The MIND-BODY-GROW program maintains that When students feel safe and are provided with opportunities to tune in and pay attention to their inner world, they are building skills linked to self-regulation. The program also recognizes that a teacher\u2019s ability to manage their own stress within the classroom has a direct and positive impact on their student\u2019s well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n

RISE partners with Well-Bean to bring the program Mind-Body-Grow to classrooms. Mind-Body-Grow provides a Well-Bean educator to share 12 classroom lessons <\/span>\n on cultivating self-awareness, managing stress, and care for mental health. As a response to increased awareness regarding secondary trauma, self-care, compassion, fatigue and overall well-being of educators, the social work practice of reflective supervision is used to address the mental health needs of staff that result from the emotional work required from teaching. In small groups, staff are provided sessions with a mental health professional to <\/span>\n enhance their reflective capacity of being abe to understand, interpret, and make meaning of behavior (their own and others\u2019) by tuning in to the possible thoughts, feelings, and motivations behind the behavior. <\/span>\n <\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Educators of grades Developmental Kindergarten-5th grade completed the Center on Great Teachers and Leaders at American Institutes for Research\u2019s Self-Assessing Social and Emotional Instruction and Competencies prior to engaging in one semester of RISE services which included professional learning, coaching, 12 weeks of the Mind-Body-Grow mindfulness curriculum, and Structured Reflection. These same teachers completed the tool again after the semester of services was completed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rationale for the the tool is summarized as:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe educational community is increasingly focused on the development of students\u2019social and emotional learning (SEL) competencies and the link between SEL and improved educational attainment and achievement. SEL is the process through which students develop the skills necessary to recognize and manage emotions, build relationships, solve interpersonal problems, and make effective and ethical decisions. The significance of SEL continues to grow in the context of policy debates concerning school improvement and individual student achievement. As a result, educators must understand how best to implement the most effective strategies to promote students\u2019 development of SEL competencies. <\/span>\n They must understand, too, how to build and improve their own SEL competencies, because teachers\u2019 social and emotional competencies directly affect how they interact with students on both social and instructional levels.<\/strong>\n \u201d -Center on Great Teachers and Leaders, p. 1<\/span>\n <\/p>\n
